How and where did you start dancing?
I began dancing at Southern Methodist University when I was 18. I
started taking ballet my senior year of high school because I was
working on pursuing musical theater at the time. So I auditioned for
the dance department at SMU in Dallas, TX. I don't know why, but I
was accepted into the department. There I fell in love with ballet
and contemporary dance and haven't looked back!
Why do you dance?
I love movement. I grew up as both a gymnast and a swimmer. Being
athletic has always been in my nature. I also studied voice from
childhood until high school. Dance is the perfect manifestation of my
love of physicality and my love of music.
What is the hardest part of being a dancer?
Even professionals have to constantly maintain their skills. Finding
time to take class, eat well, sleep enough, and feed your mind is a
hard combination of things to do when you may also have another job!
What is the best part of being a dancer?
The constant and endless challenge. It is impossible to perfect
anything! There's always something to improve upon. That's why I
feel dancers can not only continue to grow as technicians and artist,
but also as people.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to take dance classes, read, watch television, or have dinner
with my friends.
What is something interesting about you that no one knows?
If I decided i didn't want to major in dance in college I was going to
switch to Forensic Chemistry.
What is your favorite indulgence?
My favorite indulgence is the macaroni and cheese from my favorite
restaurant in New York City.
When did you dance your first Nutcracker?
I performed my first Nutcracker in November of 2007.
What does "The Nutcracker" mean to you?
The Nutcracker is childhood. Most children dream of their toys coming
to life and taking them somewhere far away. I think even if one
doesn't experience "The Nutcracker" as a child, one can still be
reminded of the innocence and fun of childhood!
What advice do you have for children watching or dancing in "The Nutcracker?"
Enjoy it! Let it be magical! And that goes double for you if you are
performing it. If you feel the spirit of it, then the audience will
too!
What is your favorite part of the Nutcracker?
My favorite part of the Nutcracker is the Arabian Variation. I think
it is the most beautiful music in the show, and often times has the
most ability to impress an audience!
